Formally Checking Out From Motels: Consequences For Not Doing It

There are over 1,925 motels in Australia with at least 90% of the motels rated as 3-star or 4-star accommodations, so you have a lot of options to choose from. Motels tend to have fewer luxurious amenities when compared to hotels but are able to offer the accommodations needed at extremely low and competitive rates. If you book a room at a motel, you are responsible for checking in and checking out at the allotted times. Some patrons often forget to formally check out of their rooms. Although it may appear like a minute mistake, you need to know that you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position.

Formally Checking Out at the Reception

Each motel will have a different check out time set for patrons. To formally check out from your motel room, you will want to speak with the reception. The reception will send an employee to inspect your room before providing you with an invoice of your final bill. The employee will look for

  • Damages to the furniture or to the windows, walls or doors.
  • Whether the rooms are left in a fairly clean condition. The employees will need to consider whether they will need to hire professional cleaning services to get stains out of the carpet or other messes that may be difficult to clean.
  • Whether you need to be charged for consuming beverages or snacks that are provided in the refrigerators or at the snack bar.

Consequences for Not Doing It

If you forget to formally check out from the motel, you are placing yourself in a vulnerable situation because you have yet to receive a formal invoice. If the motel employees notice any damages or problems that need to be addressed, they may directly bill your credit card. If you have not formally checked out from the motel, you may not be aware of the additional charges that have been made, and it can be difficult to contest the charges at a later time as you may not be able to prove that the damages are not your responsibility.

Conclusion

Take the time to formally check out from your motel. More often than not, the entire process will only take several minutes. You can rest assured that you will not receive additional charges once you receive the final invoice, and you can also contest any accusations that are made against you directly to the motel staff if necessary.
